Contractors in Arizona are licensed by the Registrar of Contractors (ROC). (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
The ROC license classification list has no class named for garage doors. Classes whose ROC scopes mention doors include R-7 Carpentry ("Metal doors or door frames" and "Hardware") and R-60 Finish Carpentry ("Metal doors" and "Automatic door closers"). Ask the ROC at (602) 542-1525 which class covers your exact job. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors) (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
R-61 Carpentry, Remodeling and Repairs covers general remodeling, additions, replacements and repairs to existing structures on projects of $50,000 or less, including labor and materials. Electrical work must be subcontracted to an appropriately licensed contractor. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
R-62 Minor Home Improvements covers remodeling, repairs and improvements on projects of $5,000 or less, with no structural work, and electrical work must be subcontracted. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
Residential electrical systems are R-11 Electrical work. A new outlet or circuit for an opener is electrical work, and cities such as Tucson require a permit for new wired outlets. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors) (source: City of Tucson Planning and Development Services)
Automatic gates (not garage doors) are listed under R-14 Fencing. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
The ROC says that, generally, if labor and materials exceed $1,000 or the job needs a permit (no matter the price), a contractor license is required. The handyman exemption in A.R.S. 32-1121 covers only work of a casual or minor nature, priced under $1,000 in total, that needs no local building permit and is not part of a larger job split into smaller contracts.
