- Look up the contractor's license record on the ROC Contractor Search, and make sure the license class covers the work in the contract.
- Confirm the person you are dealing with works for the licensed contractor by calling the number on the ROC license record.
- Get written estimates from at least three contractors, and check references.
- Put the price, who pulls the building permits, and other key terms in a written contract.
- Never pay in cash. Make checks payable to the company named in the contract, and do not let payments get ahead of the work.
- Change orders must be signed by both parties.

"Licensed, bonded and insured" in an ad is not proof. The ROC says the only sure way to know a contractor is licensed is to call the ROC or check its Contractor Search. Apart from workers' compensation, the ROC does not require insurance for a license. ROC: (602) 542-1525. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
The ROC warns that if you hire an unlicensed entity, you as the property owner have no recourse through the ROC. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
If you think you were scammed, call the ROC at (602) 542-1525 and/or local law enforcement. (source: Arizona Registrar of Contractors)
